The photos are a bit blurry as Hayley took them in the NCCU gym (and gyms always have terrible light) but they are pretty awesome photos of Hayley and her friend with some very cool folks at NC ProAm basketball tonight. They were excited to watch some summer basketball and get autographs from a bunch of UNC players – Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall, Dexter Strickland, PJ Hairston, Raymond Felton and John Henson.
I’ll post more pictures later.

Kendall wore some neon pink laces and Hayley loves neon and had her own neon laces on tonight so he took a photo of she and her friend’s shoes with his and tweeted it. I love that kid!

Hayley’s grandmother, grandfather and aunt on her birthdad’s side were in town for a doctor’s appt so we met them for lunch. Hayley got to meet Jordan, Regina’s grandson and we all enjoyed a relaxing lunch and a chance to catch up until the ugliest, darkest storm clouds rolled in. I swear we all took off for our cars out of fear!

We went up to Blacksburg for a Fourth of July vacation. Blacksburg is so lovely in the summer when it is just sweltering down here. I know Jeff was happy to visit Virginia Tech’s campus as well since it had been a few years.
The big news was that Jeff and his folks ran the Shawsville 5K. Jeff did great for his first race, his mom was first in her age group and his dad was third – the rest of us just slept in and then drove around in the Jeep cheering for them. Just for the record, Grandma Sharen crushed everyone in croquet twice. She was on the winning girls team for games with me and Hayley as well. I think that means Grandma Sharen wins the Fourth of July.

Word to the wise: don’t ever make outlandish bets with your kid over grades. I bet Hayley if she substantially raised her math grade, I’d have a limo get her at school. Of course she did it.
While I would have actually had the limo get her, I did sort of think it was a waste of money and negotiated a settlement – a pair of guinea pigs. Jeff was on the fence but when she found two guinea pigs at the SPCA that needed to be rescued, even he couldn’t resist.
Now a week later, we know now would have been vastly cheaper to just get the limo. Of course, they don’t like pellets so we are making them mini-salads twice a day. We’ve had to buy them two cages, tons of stuff and lord knows if they are happy or not. But at least it is a better use of money than limos and Hayley is happy. She’s named them Ivory and Italee after two former UNC women’s basketball players, Ivory Latta and Italee Lucas who are now in the WNBA.

The original SPCA info:
Hi, my name is Beatrice and I’m here with my friend Ramona! We’re here at the SPCA in hopes of finding someone that will love us for the rest of my life. Guinea Pigs are little, entertaining creatures who love to cuddle and we’re quite content being held by people. We enjoy cuddling together in our igloo and munching on some yummy treats of carrots and lettuce. We’ll need an owner that can spend time with us every day and help us become more comfortable in my new home. If two cute little guinea pigs are what you’ve been looking for, come check us out!

The Ultimate Question of course is what age did Jeff turn this weekend. (i’ll assume the geeks amongst us have enjoyed my bit of Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy humor)
I decided to get all fancypants and make him a homemade birthday cake. I did the inside in his beloved Virginia Tech colors even though it stained my Tar Heel hands. It turned out pretty cool!
My friend Jason got married that day too so we went down to Charlotte for that and then to Dave & Buster’s to goof off. I parked the jeep clearly right in the hottest part of the parking lot b/c my rear view window fell off.

Hayley is officially a teenager and her birthday weekend was a lot of fun (we had family in the weekend before for Easter and her family birthday celebration, I’ll post about that asap). She wanted a new phone since we only gave a very simple starter phone for her first year. So we think we exceeded her wishes and surprised her with an iPhone the night before her birthday.
On her birthday, we took Hayley and seven friends went on a boat ride around Jordan Lake for a few hours – the weather was gorgeous and the tour was amazing. We even saw bald eagle’s nests with a baby eagle’s head just peaking out and this one bird up in a tree munching on the fish in his talons – that was wild. The tour guide was great, he did just enough nature stuff to make it interesting while letting them goof off the rest of the time. I highly recommend Captain Dave and Jordan Lake Tours!
After they gorged themselves on pizzas, they wanted to go swimming so we headed up to the pool which had just opened that morning – great timing! After they got back, it was time for cake and ice cream. The cake turned out amazing, Three Moon Bakery did the cake itself again and fantastic Jennifer at Carolina Sweetgum did an adorable skull cake topper for the cake. The look on Hayley’s face was just amazing.
After they settled in for movies upstairs or video games downstairs. Then we watched goofy youtube videos on the downstairs tv until they were nodding off – I assumed they were ready to crash so I too went to bed about 1:30am but they must have gotten a second wind because Hayley says some of them made it up until 4am. They were a tired bunch when we dragged them up about 9:30 for breakfast!

We saw Hayley’s first/birthmom and sister last week for lunch and an afternoon of goofing off at Celebration Station.
