Monday was a fantastic day. We slept late, hit the hot tub and then headed out on Hwy 12 down the Outer Banks. By the end of the day, we’d visited three lighthouses (Bodie, Hatteras & Ocracoke) and ridden the ferry twice.
Hayley, bless her youthful legs, climbed ALL the way up the Cape Hatteras lighthouse – all 270 steps. Interestingly after our studying the moving of the lighthouse, she was fascinated with the old site. On the stories we read and video we watched, they talked about the quality of the granite the movers found and it is that rock that is left.
Hayley is also entering a contest for the school system for artistic endeavors, so she took my camera and got some shots. Sitting on the bench outside of Bodie Lighthouse, watching her out in the fields with the camera, lining up angles – well let’s just say it was a moment I never want to forget. She’s ten and can already handle $3,000 worth of camera gear. The child has a great eye.
On the final ferry ride back from Ocracoke, she curled up in blankets and got up on my lap. I held her, we sang songs we made up when she was younger and acted silly. The wind blew and the ferry swayed – and I fell in love all over again with my child, with motherhood and the beach.

Hayley went over to my folks and had a blast. They went fishing on a friend’s farm and Hayley got eight fish! The next day they took a train ride!

Tonight we went to Chili’s because they were giving all the profits to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital. A very good cause of course!
We all went to celebrate Hayley’s awesome report card as well as ‘Nice to meet you day’, the anniversary of the first day we ever met Hayley. We had such fun – silly toasts, sharing a gooey dessert, sharing our feelings of love and happiness over our family. It was one of those nights all is right with our world. I won’t forget it for a long time.

We had some of Hayley’s first family members up to the house for a nice visit. Her sister Faith, grandparents and great grandparents all came. We relaxed, went to lunch and took the kids to the pool.

On August 8th, 1998 we said ‘I do’ in a lovely wedding in Chapel Hill at the Chapel of the Cross with a reception at the Horace Williams House.
Those were the smartest two words I ever said. 10 years later and we are still very much in love and best friends.

Jeff’s parents John and Sharen are touring Rome and Greece with the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team. The team has a blog with photos from the games and site seeing and we found a few photos of his folks.

This might have been the longest party circuit ever! Cupcakes at school, big cookie at soccer, family party at home and then big party with friends at WiiBounce. WiiBounce is half flat screens and Wiis and half bouncy inflatables.
It was SO FUN. We didn’t take a ton of photos because we were having so much fun. The idea of having her friends bring pet items for the shelter instead of gifts was a huge success. Kids had fun getting them, parents didn’t have to worry about wrapping and getting the right stuff and we didn’t have to worry about unwrapping so the kids played longer. We’ll take all the stuff to the SCPA soon too!
The family party was fun too, she got her Wii and all sorts of goodies to go with it. Everyone joined in playing the Wii, even the grandparents!

Hayley had a chance to see some of her bdad’s family at a soccer game in late March.
I love this photo, this is Hayley with her half-brother Dalton, they were both so tired.

Some cute photos from Hayley’s camera (and many by her) at the UNC-FSU men’s basketball game this week. It was senior night and the final home game of the season.
This photo is so adorable – she was screaming after a huge dunk on a breakaway by Tyler Hansbrough, off an assist from Quentin Thomas. Jeff says it is one of his favorite photos ever of Hayley and I think I agree.

Another I love, Cheering her little heart out in her #50 (Hansbrough) jersey with Hillison on the back.
